The move is set to decongest national prisons and promote
better living conditions in the country’s prisons that had a population of over
19,000.
President Mnangagwa extended the amnesty in terms of
Section 112 (1) (a) and (d) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.
The amnesty has emptied the country’s female prisons as
well as juvenile prisons. All juveniles have also been given their freedom
irrespective of the graveness of their crimes.
