TEEN DROWNS TRYING TO SAVE FRIEND

The mother of a teenage student, who drowned in Chichoyi earlier this month while trying to save her friend, says her daughter died a hero.

Memory Kachamabundu, 43, who is recovering from a stroke, said her daughter Sharmine,14, was a very disciplined child.

She died while she was trying to save her friend Chipo Dube. The tragedy occurred on December 5 at St Irves Dam, here in Chinhoyi.

Memory is staying with her brother in Karoi while Sharmaine was staying with her father.

“Sharmaine was staying with her father while I am at my brother’s house in Karoi due to my ill health.

“She was a disciplined and obedient child. Her friend started swimming and Sharmaine realised that her friend was drowning and she then tried to rescue her and this resulted in both of them drowning.

“It pains a lot as a parent to lose a child.”

Her neighbour, Mrs Mateesanwa, told H- Metro Sharmaine was more of a daughter to her.

“Sharmaine’s death has left a big deep wound in our lives. It’s a very painful death.

“What pains us the most is that the dam has become a menace to society as two other children also drowned in the same dam.”

She said just before her death, Sharmaine came to her home and asked her to open the Zimsec portal so that she could access her Grade Seven examination results.

Zvikomborero Munikwa, whose sister Chipo also died in the tragedy, said the two friends had been playing at home that day.

They then left and the next thing she remembers is one of their friends coming home to tell her that the two had drowned.

“I quickly rushed there. When I arrived, no one was willing to retrieve the bodies of my sister and her friend.

“However, two men later volunteered and retrieved the body of Chipo while Shairmaine’s body remained stuck in the dam.

“We then took Chipo to the hospital and that was when we heard that Sharmaine’s body had been found.

“It pains a lot to lose our beloved ones under such circumstances.

“I want to urge parents to make sure that children stay away from rivers and dams.” H Metro

WOMEN BARRED FROM MADZIBABA'S BURIAL CEREMONY

They were a big part of his fan base but, when the time came to say goodbye to Sungura godfather Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria at his final resting place here yesterday, the women were barred from the burial ceremony.

The burial was held in a manner that honours his deep cultural roots.

Following the tradition of a Muslim burial, Madzibaba’s final send-off was a blend of reverence and cultural significance.

His body was wrapped in a white cloth, reflecting the customs upheld by village elders who guided the ceremony.

The elders insisted on adhering to traditional practices, demonstrating the community’s respect for their customs.

In a poignant display of these traditions, women were barred from the burial site.

The ceremony for the 69-year-old musician was a fitting tribute to a man who has profoundly influenced the music industry.

Many will remember this day long into the future, filled with heartfelt tributes and celebrations of a life dedicated to music and mentorship.

Madzibaba’s legacy as a transformative figure in the music scene was evident as notable artists gathered to pay their last respects. H Metro

MAI NGA IS A PROSTITUTE, SAYS KAPFUPI

Comedian Kapfupi has described his estranged wife Mai Nga as a “prostitute” after she dumped him at 1am and walked into the arms of her lover.

The lover has only been identified as Tonderai.

Mai Nga also took their four kids − Loice, Stella, Freddie Jnr and Bea − along with her, leaving Kapfupi a lonely and broken man at his home.

Kapfupi has two other kids from a previous marriage to Margaret Gejo.

“She is a prostitute,” Kapfupi, whose real name is Freddie Manjalima, told H-Metro in an exclusive interview.

He claimed Mai Nga deceived him by saving her lover’s name in her phone as “Yeukai” to give an impression that the contact was a female friend.

“In her phone, she saved his name as Yeukai but his name is Tonderai. She was even telling him bharanzi achikarara. It’s something that shocked me. She was a person I trusted, a person I thought we would be together even in old age.

“She was confused by someone who gave her whatever confused her until she fled from me at 1am. I have all the V11s.”

He added: “I have all the evidence. When she was contacted by my aunt, Mai Nga vakati wangu ndinaye ende zveshuwawo angaanaye.

“Paakatiza akatiza nepamuvuri. She told my aunt that she had a miscarriage and the pregnancy was not mine but her lover’s.

“Manheru avakatiza vaitaura nemurume uyu vachiti bharanzi achiri akavata.”

Kapfupi claims Mai Nga was impregnated by her lover even when they were still living together as husband and wife.

“She said he had a miscarriage but it was this guy’s pregnancy. This guy threatened me but I will expose him with the passage of time.

“Even if he is a law enforcement person, is he allowed to take other people’s wives?

“We will talk about that but if I die then it’s because of this guy.”

We asked Kapfupi to address reports claiming that Mai Nga dumped him because he was no longer satisfying her in bed.

He said: “I don’t know, if that is the case then she found what is right for her and we say congratulations.

“However, the love that I was giving her, if she finds it from this Yeukai, I don’t know.

“I will reveal his name, he is a big guy who has a big position, he insulted me, said he will sue me but I’m coming for him, whatever it costs.

“He went into my bedroom knowingly, insulted me, he knew she was my wife, she took my wife, he must kill me.

“He must also lose his wife, she should know about this, his family should also collapse just like the way my family collapsed.

“If I meet this guy, I don’t know what will happen, I have a small body but when we meet, this Yeukai, or Tonderai, he should be careful.

“He has tormented my family. Let him keep his ‘prostitute’, I hope there won’t be someone who is also going to come and seduce Mai Nga and tell her that her lover is nothing.

“This is what happened to me. But this has really pained me in a very big way.”

Kapfupi said he is planning to hit back in a big way.

“He knew that this is Kapfupi’s wife and if push comes to shove I will go on social media or even sing a song about this guy.

“They have destroyed my work, they have destroyed my family but it’s okay.

“I was working with Mai Nga and now I have to find a replacement.”

Asked if he was prepared to accept Mai Nga back, if such a window was opened, Kapfupi said: “I don’t love someone who would have been taken by someone else. She is now someone else’s wife, I won’t take her back.”

It’s not the first time that Kapfupi has found himself having to deal with challenges in his marriage.

When his first marriage to Margaret Gejo collapsed, her relatives made sensational claims that the comedian kidnapped the couple’s kids.

Kapfupi took his kids when he found out that Margaret had remarried.

Now, he is dealing with a similar explosive case in which another marriage has collapsed. H Metro

MADZIBABA ZAKARIA LAID TO REST

Sungura music icon, Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria, has been laid to rest at his rural home in Chavhakaire village, Chiweshe, where hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their last respects.

His final journey was marked by celebration and remembrance, as fans and community members came together to honour the life and legacy of the music legend.

Prominent artistes were among the mourners who gave glowing tributes to the Sungura ace.

“I am deeply saddened by the departure of Madzibaba Zakaria. He was a brother, but also like a father and mother to me. He shaped my career. I am deeply saddened by his departure. I worked with him from 1984,” musician, Alec Macheso said.

“I knew this man even before he started music way back, which is why I came to lay him to rest,” musician Hosea Chipanga said.

“Madzibaba Zakaria was an inspiration to me; he shaped my career. I know why he was called Senior Lecturer because when I joined the industry, he urged me to be strong, especially being a woman,” musician, Loveness Mainato said.

“Madzibaba was a father to me by way of being older and by way of being a leader in the industry,” Musician, Simon Mutambi said.

Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria’s wife, Margaret, who was married to the late musician for 45 years, led relatives in paying tribute to her husband.

“We were married in 1980, and he is one person who taught me that forgiveness is an important thing, and he taught me to work with my hands, he urged me not to eat what I have not worked for. I was short-tempered, but he changed me. I met him while I was in music, and we even sang together at one time,” wife, Magaret Chiroro said.

“My father was a soft-spoken man; even if you spoke to him harshly, he would reply in a soft way. I am greatly pained by his passing on,” daughter, Rudo Zakaria said.

“When I first got into the family, I used to cook for 32 people, because he used to look after many people. If he looked after 30 people, there would come a new group, so my father-in-law was full of love,” daughter-in-law, Herrina Makonese said.

Music promoters, politicians and many other stakeholders paid tribute to the musician.

“He valued work above money. As a promoter, I worked well with him, and we once went to Mozambique together,” Music promoter Patson Chimbodza said.

“We thank the senior lecturer for the work he did; he was a living example of the well-disciplined artistes. He kept time, he was an example to the youngsters, so we hope the young will learn from his legacy,” Director Arts Promotions and Development, NACZ, Barbara Gotore said.

“On behalf of the ruling party in Mashonaland Central, we are mourning the loss of a celebrated musician whom we worked well with, and he supported us,” ZANU-PF Mashonaland Central Province, Cde Brian Jonga said.

As Mazowe RDC, we say we are at a loss. He put our district on the map, and we have been robbed of a big man in our area,” Mazowe RDC Chairperson, Cde John Mudzonga said.

Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria died at the age of 69, after battling diabetes and hypertension.

He leaves an indelible mark on the music industry from his career spanning over 50 years.

Zakaria’s burial was done in line with the Muslim culture, with women not allowed when the final rites were performed. ZBC

MUGWADI CLASHES WITH TUNGWARARA

TRUMP IN MAJOR POLICY SHIFT

CASH RICH ZVIGANANDA THROW ZANU PF INTO TURMOIL

The tension between Zanu-PF's traditional power structures and its emerging cash-rich benefactors has escalated, with President Mnangagwa's adviser Paul Tungwarara taking aim at party heavyweights resisting his elevation to the central committee.

Tungwarara was last weekend co-opted into the Zanu-PF central committee by the Manicaland provincial coordinating committee (PCC). However, the move was immediately nullified by the party's commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, who said it violated a June 30 circular. Machacha argued that the vacant seat, arising after Dorothy Mabika of Chipinge was elected provincial women's league chairperson, could only be filled by a nominee from Chipinge. He also warned against the use of money in canvassing for the slot and ordered the PCC to redo the process in line with party regulations.

Zanu-PF secretary for legal affairs Patrick Chinamasa expressed full support for Machacha's directive. Yet hours later, Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa indicated that the matter would be settled by the politburo, signaling that the party's top decision-making body might side with Tungwarara.

At a recent rally in Chipingwe, Tungwarara appeared to launch a subtle attack on senior party officials, accusing unnamed Manicaland figures of spreading gossip and attempting to sabotage presidential empowerment projects he is spearheading.

"You can't abuse your position to change certain things and the vision of 2030… Unity is our strength… but it cannot happen if someone is going to the president to create fiction and lies," he said.

"These are empowerment programmes, and they are not there to create factions in Zanu-PF… Be wary of people who are using divide-and-rule tactics in Manicaland."

Tungwarara's rally included donations of US$25,000 each to the Chipingwe East, Chipingwe Central, Chipingwe South, and Musikavanhu constituencies.

Support for his co-option came from Musikavanhu legislator and Primary and Secondary Education deputy minister Angelina Gata, as well as Chipingwe district PCC chairperson Temba Munaiwa Sithole, who emphasized Tungwarara's local roots.

Observers note parallels with the  earlier co-option of Zanu-PF benefactor Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who also faced accusations of using financial influence to secure a central committee seat. Machaka, however, maintained that the two cases were not comparable.

The controversy comes against a backdrop of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga's earlier calls to curb the influence of businessmen allegedly using wealth to dominate the ruling party ahead of the October annual conference.

Tungwarara's case underscores the growing friction within Zanu-PF between long-standing party structures and influential new entrants who wield significant financial clout. Standard

MINE WORKER CAUGHT STEALING US$4 GOLD ORE

A mine worker at Old Nic Mine on the outskirts in Bulawayo has been sentenced to a wholly suspended eight-month prison term after he was caught stealing gold ore worth US$4 from an underground shaft.

Thabiso Moyo (32) of Mzilikazi suburb appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Patience Madondo on Thursday and was convicted of theft.

Moyo was sentenced to eight months in prison, wholly suspended for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence during that period.

In her remarks, the magistrate criticised Moyo’s actions, noting the irony that he sacrificed a job paying US$360 per month for gold ore valued at just US$4.

Prosecuting, Mr Joseph Rugara told the court that on 5 December at about 6pm, Moyo reported for duty at the mine’s northern underground shaft.

“The following morning at around 4.30am, Moyo came out of the shaft after knocking off duty. Upon exit, he was searched by a security guard manning the gate,” said Mr Rugara.

During the search, the guard found six small stones of gold ore, wrapped in plastic and concealed inside the pocket of Moyo’s boxer shorts. He was immediately apprehended.

Moyo was handed over to detectives from the CID Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit (MFFU), who subsequently arrested him. Sunday News

SB MOYO'S DEATH, SADDEST CHAPTER OF MY LIFE, SAYS CHIWENGA

VP Chiwenga says the deaths of late former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Sibusiso “SB” Moyo and Air Chief Marshal Perrance Shiri, marked one the saddest chapters of his life.

He was speaking at the wedding ceremony of Moyo’s son Sibusiso Brendon Moyo and his fiancée Tawana Mercy Gawaza in Harare yesterday.

“I want to reflect a little on my relationship with the late former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Lieutenant-General Sibusiso ‘SB’ Moyo. We enjoyed a cordial relationship, from our military service to public service. Our relationship was founded on mutual trust, respect and integrity.

“It transcended our professional lives to brotherhood and we became family. I stand here today not only as guest of honour but as a father figure to Sibusiso and Tawana.”

“To our newlyweds, be each other’s strength in times of weakness. Celebrate your joys together. Comfort one another in sorrow and stand united through thick and thin, in both good times and bad,” he said.

The Vice President counselled them to surround themselves with people who uplift them.

“Marriage, much like life, will have its ups and downs. You will experience seasons of sunshine and seasons of storms. Always remember, with Christ at the centre of your marriage, no challenge is insurmountable,” he said.

“As Philippians 4:13 assures us, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ Let this promise be your anchor in difficult times.

“Build your home on the solid pillars of love, trust and care. Let forgiveness flow abundantly, communication remain open and respect be mutual.

“A happy family is created through daily acts of kindness, sacrifice and unwavering commitment. Always remember that marriage is a journey, not a destination.

“Today, we also take a moment to honour the families who have nurtured and guided Sibusiso and Tawana to this wonderful moment.

“To the Moyo and Gawaza families, we celebrate your legacy as it continues through this union. May you find joy as you witness this new chapter unfold.”

Yesterday’s wedding ceremony was graced by notable figures, including Minister of Defence Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Minister of Energy and Power Development July Moyo, Deputy President of the Senate Lieutenant-General (Retd) Mike Nyambuya and service chiefs led by Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Emmanuel Matatu.

WE WILL STOP 2030 : CHAMISA

GOVT : WE HAVE NOW PAID FOR CANCER MACHINES

Zimbabwe is set to take delivery of a new generation of cutting-edge radiotherapy machines early next year after Treasury finalised payment of the initial deposits for the equipment, which will be installed at two major referral hospitals.

The machines, which are currently under manufacture, are being procured using US$30 million raised from the sugar tax introduced in the 2024 National Budget.

According to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion’s 2026 Zimbabwe Infrastructure Investment Programme released last month, Treasury has paid US$5,3 million for the equipment.

Procurement of the machines — set to be installed at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare and Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo — represents the largest public sector investment in cancer treatment infrastructure in decades.

A Government technical team is scheduled to travel to the manufacturer’s plant in the first two weeks of January for pre-delivery inspections, after which the equipment will be shipped to Zimbabwe.

The authorities have since begun decommissioning the older radiotherapy machines at Parirenyatwa and Mpilo.

The units, which remain functional, will be redeployed to public hospitals in Gweru, and Masvingo or Chinhoyi, allowing the country to establish additional cancer treatment centres.

The expansion will increase the number of radiotherapy sites from two to four nationwide, helping to reduce patient load, shorten waiting times and bring lifesaving treatment closer to communities.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora confirmed that the procurement process is now complete and that suppliers have already begun manufacturing the machines.

“We completed the procurement process; the Minister of Finance (Economic Development and Investment Promotion) paid the deposit that was required — that is 20 percent — and the machines are already being manufactured,” he said.

“Some of the machines, one of the companies that are supplying the low-energy machines, have already completed them.”

The Government, Dr Mombeshora said, will dispatch a team of specialists in early January to conduct a pre-shipment inspection.

Once the machines arrive, installation will begin at the two referral hospitals while the older units are redeployed to establish new treatment centres.

“Back home here, we have started the decommissioning process,” he said.

“One new machine will be installed at Mpilo and another at Parirenyatwa. The old machine at Mpilo is being moved to Gweru so we can establish a new cancer treatment centre there. We will start with the old machine as we build capacity.”

He added that the older Parirenyatwa machine will either go to Chinhoyi or Masvingo, with the latter receiving strong consideration because of its emerging medical school, which could use the equipment for training purposes.

“The next phase will also be the decommissioning of the equipment at Parirenyatwa, and we plan to either put it in Chinhoyi hospital or in Masvingo,” he said.

“But I was suggesting that we put it in Masvingo since there is a new medical school that is coming up there, maybe to help in training . . .”

The establishment of radiotherapy services in Gweru and either Masvingo or Chinhoyi will represent a major milestone in Zimbabwe’s efforts to decentralise specialised healthcare.

Reads Treasury’s Infrastructure Investment Programme: “As part to improve health services through the procurement of new cancer diagnostic and treatment machines, a total of US$5,3 million has been paid as deposits to suppliers of medical equipment to enable the delivery and installation of the equipment. The equipment includes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), fusion pump, syringe pump, vital signs monitor, fluid warmers, gas chromatograph, mass spectrometer, point-of-care blood gas analyser, chemistry analyser and video laryngoscope to be distributed at Parirenyatwa, Mpilo, Sally Mugabe, United Bulawayo and Chitungwiza Central hospitals.”

For years, cancer patients unable to afford private treatment have endured long waits or costly travel to Harare and Bulawayo.

Doubling public radiotherapy capacity is expected to ease the burden and drastically improve treatment outcomes.

Funding for the equipment is being drawn from the sugar tax introduced in the 2024 National Budget.

The levy, imposed on sugar-sweetened beverages to help curb non-communicable diseases, is now being channelled into critical healthcare investments.

Cancer treatment machines were identified as a top priority for last year’s collections.

The Government is procuring a full suite of modern radiotherapy technologies that includes MRI, fusion pump and syringe pumps.

An MRI machine uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of internal organs, tissues and tumours, allowing doctors to diagnose cancers, strokes, spinal conditions and other diseases with high accuracy.

A fusion pump delivers controlled amounts of medication, nutrients or fluids into a patient’s bloodstream, ensuring precise dosing during treatment.

A syringe pump performs a similar function on a smaller scale, administering very small but accurate volumes of drugs, especially critical in intensive care and paediatric wards. Sunday Mail

MICROFINANCE FIRMS IN TROUBLE AS GOVT OWES US$85M

The Government is limping financially; for the last five months, it has not remitted US$85m it deducted from civil servants’ salaries to service loans borrowed from microfinance companies, Masvingo Mirror has established.

In addition to the US$85m, there is a Zig component backlog which Masvingo Mirror could not establish.

Stakeholders have called for government intervention to save the situation.

The situation is dire and has paralysed microfinance institutions, banks and deposit-taking microfinance institutions throughout the country, with CBZ subsidiary Red Sphere Finance suspending with immediate effect all loans to civil servants until further notice, according to a statement released by the company on December 9, 2025.

Several sources who spoke to Masvingo Mirror on condition of anonymity said many microfinance institutions are closing shop. The situation also affects government policy on financial inclusion, with civil servants who are most of the poor failing to access loans in times of need.

Salary Service Bureau (SSB) Paymaster Twoboy Shoko confirmed the arrears in a telephone interview with Masvingo Mirror but declined to discuss the actual figure. He, however, dismissed allegations of a financial crisis in government and said the delay in remittances was not due to the government’s inability to pay but a deliberate measure to manage liquidity in the economy.

He said the backlog will be cleared by the end of this year, with 150 microfinance institutions being paid this week alone.

The position, however, contradicts sources who told Masvingo Mirror that the government is so broke that it is failing to pay the second tranche of US$75 presidential civil servant bonuses. Sources said payment of the US$75 is no longer going to be done together with the December salaries but has been pushed to December 30 to allow the Ministry of Finance to look for the money.

It is still not certain whether this payment will happen on December 30, and other sources said civil servants may receive the bonus in 2026. Sources also said that the government is not remitting subscriptions to the National Social Security Authority and Premier Medical Aid Society.

Godfrey Chitambo, Executive Director of the Zimbabwe Association of Microfinance Institutions (ZAMFI), said he is not aware of the arrears.

“I am not aware that micro finance institutions are owed by the Government. We had a meeting on Wednesday and that issue was never raised. If that is the case and our members alert us, we will take up the matter,” he said.

“Yes, I can confirm that the government has a backlog on payments to microfinance institutions. It is not because the government lacks the capacity to pay, but it is one of the measures to control liquidity in the market. The amount will be cleared by the end of December this year. This week alone, we are going to pay 150 microfinance institutions.

“Microfinance institutions have flooded the market. It was discovered that civil servants lack financial discipline, and this had become a major concern. Some employees were getting loans from more than four institutions, leaving them highly indebted. SSB and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe will hold district and provincial workshops next year to train civil servants on financial discipline,” said Shoko.

Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Edgar Moyo referred questions to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment.

Efforts to get a comment from Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Mthuli Ncube were futile as his mobile phone was on voicemail.

“Please be advised that Red Sphere Finance is suspending lending to SSB clients effective December 9, 2025. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause. Further communication will be shared once there are notable developments,” reads the letter signed by Red Sphere Finance General Manager, Desmund Ali.

Desmund Ali, Red Sphere Finance General Manager, declined to comment and referred questions to CBZ Group Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, Matilda Nyathi. Masvingo Mirror
