Banket Primary School was on Sunday evening destroyed by
fire which is suspected to have emanated from an electrical fault.
Mashonaland West Education Provincial Director Sylvestor
Mashayamombe confirmed the incident saying the school’s girl hostel was gutted
by fire on Sunday around 8.00 pm and no one died in the inferno.
“We thank God that none of the students was injured or
killed, when we arrived at the scene all the children had been evacuated from
the hostel though most of them lost their valuables in the inferno obviously
they could not run away with anything,” he said.
Mashayamombe expressed gratitude to Banket residents saying
they played a very big role in stopping the fire,
‘‘I thank the local people for calming the fire because
there was no fire brigade I just saw a vehicle from banket which was said to be
with a tanker, it also helped a lot in stopping the fire,” he said.
He added that the cause of the fire is still under
investigations and all the responsible authorities with the help of the Schools
Psychological Services are already on the scene to determine whether the school
needs renovation or restructuring.
Mashayamombe said the Ministry had since asked the parents
of the boarders to collect their children from the school until their
accommodation gets reliably secured. However he said school will proceed as
usual because it is not the whole school that was destroyed. h metro
