President Robert Mugabe has conferred degrees to 3 260 graduands from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in Harare today.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, UZ Vice Chancellor Professor Levi Nyagura said their institution thrives to be amongst the top ten universities in Africa.
Professor Nyagura said the university’s holistic approach to students’ education has created a vibrant knowledgable community.
Professor Nyagura added this graduation ceremony in the 62nd year history of the university is crowned by a record statistic of 52 percent female student population of the over 17 300 graduands.
Vice Chancellor Nyagura said: “The UZ has embraced the ZIM ASSET through use of knowledge by constructing a Lecture Theatre which is almost complete, with a sitting capacity of 850 for the auditorium and five seminar rooms with a total sitting capacity of 300”.
He said their institution thrives to be amongst the top ten universities in Africa.
Professor Nyagura also reiterated that the university’s holistic approach to students’ education has created a vibrant knowledgable community.
The degrees comprised 21 Doctors of Philosophy graduands, 24 percent of whom are female.
187 of the graduands at the 2017 ceremony attained first class pass and 43 percent of them are female making these achievements a new record representing 25 percent increase over the 2016 figure.
The UZ graduation ceremony is also unique in that the institution also presented the second group of the Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.
Another outstanding feature of this year’s graduation ceremony is that Chief Murinye of Masvingo has made history of becoming the first ever traditional chief to attain the prestigious UZ Law degre.
Among today’s graduands were Tongai Kasukuwere a member of the Zanu PF Youth League, ZRP Deputy Commissioner General Innocent Matibhiri who attained a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy and MDC-T’s vice president Thokozane Khupe.
