The Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has reportedly suspended the officer-in-charge of Karoi Prison to pave way for investigations into the recent escape of three dangerous inmates, NewsDay has established.

According to sources, the officer-in-charge, identified as Superintendent Katsadza, was suspended last week amid revelations that a board of inquiry would be launched soon to investigate what transpired when three D-class prisoners escaped from Karoi Prison early this month.

The suspects, who escaped on November 11, included a murderer, armed robber and a burglar, and were re-arrested with the help of members of the public.

According to sources, the communication of Katsadza’s suspension was done via the telephone.
“He was notified by his superiors that he had been suspended to pave way for a board of inquiry,” a prisons official said on condition of anonymity.

Cover Warasi, who was serving a murder sentence, was re-arrested after a tip-off from residents at a nearby farm, while Confidence Mutemachani, an armed robbery convict, was apprehended the following day at Corner Store along the Harare-Chirundu Highway.

Anyway Mutukura, who is serving a sentence for unlawful entry, was arrested a few days later following a manhunt.

Acting ZPCS spokesperson, Priscilla Mthembo was unreachable yesterday.
