POLY STUDENT JAILED FOR BEDDING MINOR

STUDENT at the Bulawayo Polytechnic will spend the next nine months in prison for bedding a Grade Seven pupil from Plumtree.

Moses Khuphe (21) of Pumula East suburb in Bulawayo, was convicted on his plea of guilty to having sexual intercourse with a young person when he appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Livard Philemon.

Mr Philemon sentenced him to 12 months in jail. Three months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not within that period commit a similar offence.

In mitigation, Khuphe begged to be pardoned, saying he was a student and the jail term would disrupt his studies.

“I beg your pardon Your Worship, I was in love with her and I failed to contain myself which caused me to have sexual intercourse with her. I’m a student at Bulawayo Polytechnic and a jail sentence will disrupt my studies,’’ he said.

Prosecuting, Mrs Rose Sibanda said in May this year, Khuphe proposed love to the 13-year-old girl who is a pupil at a Plumtree school.
He then met her at a relative’s house in Mathendele suburb in Plumtree and had sex with her three times.

“The matter came to light on July 17 when the juvenile disappeared from her home at around 8PM. Her mother searched for her and found her with Khuphe.

“Upon being questioned by her mother, the juvenile revealed that Khuphe was her boyfriend and they had had sexual intercourse before,’’ said Mrs Sibanda. The matter was reported to the police leading to the student’s arrest. chronicle
