GWERU TOWN CLERK SACKED

Gweru City Cuncil on Monday fired suspended Town Clerk Daniel Matawuon charges of gross incompetence, negligence of duty and inconsistency in executing his duties.
Matawu was suspended on January 15 this year. He faced 29 counts ranging from mismanagement of council affairs, corruption and incompetence.
Chairperson of the commission running the affairs at the local authority, Tsunga Mhangami said Matawu's termination of contract is with effect from January 15.
"The board of enquiry which looked into his suspension concluded their findings last week and recommended that we reinstate, punish or dismiss him,” Mhangami told journalists at a press briefing at Town House.
"As council, we have decided it is in the best interest of the city of Gweru and residents that we terminate the services of Daniel Matawu."
Mhangami said out of the 29 counts Matawu was facing, he was found guilty on 15 but acquitted on 14 counts.
In May this year, Matawu filed a chamber application at the Bulawayo High Court challenging his suspension.
The former Town Clerk argued that his suspension was null and void and was effected when the tenure of office of the caretaker council had expired.
The three commissioners were appointed by Local Government minister Savior Kasukuwere in August last year to run affairs at council following the suspension of councillors but their term of office expired on November 13.
Kasukuwere however extended their term of office.
Matawu, together with suspended mayor Hamutendi Kombayi and the late deputy mayor, Artwell Matyorauta were also arrested in March this year on allegations of defrauding council funds.
