The late former Minister of Finance and veteran educationist, Dr Samuel Mumbengegwi who died in Harare on Tuesday has been declared a liberation war hero.

Dr Mumbengegwi (74) succumbed to hypertension, diabetes and a kidney ailment. He also served as higher and Tertiary Education Minister among other portfolios.

Dr Mumbengegwi’s body will lie in state at the family home in Vainona this Friday before leaving for burial at the Mumbengegwi homestead in Chivi, Masvingo province on Sunday.

At the time of his death, Dr Mumbengegwi, who was also a former Zanu PF provincial chairman for Masvingo, was a full time lecturer at the Great Zimbabwe University in the Faculty of Education.

He is survived by his wife Salina, five children and 8 grandchildren.

Mourners are gathered at House Number 22 Stour Road, Vainona, Harare.
