There was pandemonium at a city building housing the People’s Own Savings Bank after some of the offices caught fire, prompting the evacuation of the entire building for about one hour just before midday today.

The fire, suspected to have been sparked by an electrical fault, destroyed hundreds of dollars’ worth of property at TAM Chartered Accountants offices on the second floor of the building that is owned by CAI pension fund.

A swift reaction by the Masvingo fire brigade stopped the fire from spreading to the rest of the building that also houses Zinara, Tel One, Leviticus Investments together with POSB, among other small businesses.

Banking operations resumed normally in the POSB banking hall about an hour after the fire was put out by the Fire Brigade.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said investigations to establish the cause of the fire were ongoing.
Social media was today awash with false alarmist reports suggesting that disgruntled depositors of POSB had set the building alight after failing to access their money.
