DIASPORAN LOSES $300 000 HOUSE OVER $4 000 DEBT : BROTHER ARRESTED

A Zimbabwean in the diaspora lost his house in the affluent Matsheumhlope suburb worth more than $300,000 after his brother whom he had entrusted with the title deeds used them as collateral to get a loan from the now defunct Geozing Pawn- broking Investments.

Thousands of people lost valuable property which they used as collateral to get loans or sold to get money to invest in Geozing which promised interest of about 30 percent per month on any money invested with it.

Tendai Chitonho only got to know that his house had been sold when he found his name on the Geozing Pawnbrokers’ creditors’ list in 2012 and discovered that his elder brother John Chitonho and wife Hlengiwe Maphosa had given the title deeds as collateral security for a loan of $4,050.
Chitonho and Maphosa had told the complainant that the title deeds for house Number 6, Colen Road had been lost when he returned home in September, 2012.

Tendai Chitonho had trusted his brother and gave him the power of attorney for safekeeping of the house and title deeds when he left for the United Kingdom in 2000. Twelve years later, Chitonho and his wife betrayed the trust because of greed and obtained a loan of $4, 050 from Geozing, which they failed to pay back resulting in the house being sold.

A frail looking Chitonho, who could hardly stand in the dock, and his wife Maphosa now face a charge of fraud involving $320 000 being the value of the house, and another one of theft of the title deeds.

Magistrate Gladmore Mushove on Thursday last week granted the couple $200 bail.  Chitonho and Maphosa have not been asked to plead. Prosecuting, Raymond Makhaza told how in 2000 the couple was entrusted with the title deeds by the complainant for safekeeping.

It is said on September 26, 2012, the couple went to Geozing Pawnbrokers and obtained a loan, using title deeds for the house without the knowledge of the owner. To cover up for their actions after the house had been auctioned, Chitonho and Maphosa allegedly lied that the title deeds had been lost.
Following a tip off from other relatives, the complainant browsed through Geozing creditors and established that his house had been sold.

A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the couple.  Chitonho and Maphosa will be back in court next week.

Todiniko nhai vehama, nyaya idzi dzawanda, who do you trust now,Diaspora yakayambutsa vakawanda chokwadi,I remeber the first time i also bought my own property for cash. Then i thought let me now support my relatives from the rent money instead of me sending it always.

I thank God that i still have my property but my relationship with the very people i tried to help is shattered.Todzoka kumusha here kuzogara kana kuti tongo tatarika takadaro?? streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessedd!!

Don't stress unofa vakafara

It's a typical Zimbo thing shamwari - basa rekudhingurana everyday panze pekuti tibatsirane sezvinoita ma chapati. Kubudirira kwedu vanhu vatema kuchanetsa nekuti we are our own worst enemy - hativakane, basa nderemajerasi

Hapana end times apa - that's the "normal" Zimbabwean way of doing things, kudhingurana

this is a stupid brother. why didnt he say the truth b4 the house got auctioned! the bro in UK could have given/loaned him the $4050 plus interest rather than losing his house.

Maggie, asylum haitadzise munhu kukwira ndege, you just need to be smart about it. Isusu tiri ma asylum but kumba tinoenda every year

Nyaya yako is so similar to my own story. I ended up asking my closest sibling to go and stay in that house ndichiti pamwe nyaya yacho ingapere. Iye manje ndiye anaga ave pa tight akuitirwa godo !! Haihwinike nyaya yacho mudhara you just need to have a thick skin chete

Vanenge vachizviita vanhu vakangwara ka waona ?
Wataura a good point, brother could have sent that money pane kuita lose a house worth so much money !!

Ko, nhai vanhu; imba yakatengeswa marii. Mari yakaenda kunobhadhara chikwereti imarii, ende, yakasara yakaiwsepi?

I think this couple in Zim were jealous of the brother ari kuUK. Obviously they were getting letters threatening to auction the house but they didn't give a hoot. After all ivo vaiziva kuti hapana chavairuza. Surely who will do that kuna MKOMA WAKE only the greed and jealousy spiteful animals can do that.

VaZukuru kuDiaspora Uyai mega muite basa renyu. kana kurikuvaka isa bango nhasi woisa rimwe mangwanaacho. Hama hadzichina kumira mushe kuno. Garai nepaper work yenyu murimi. MUSATUMIREBA NDAPOTA.

Ipapa ndipo pauchaona rimwe zirume richiti hama yangu ndinovimba naye ini rega atiitere. Wake up and smell the coffe varume hazvishamise kuti pamwe this UK guy akatombopiwa warning yekutruster brother yake to that point neMrs yake iye akati haude hama dzangu manje ndezvipi nhasi.

Contrary to your experience, i dont have issues with relatives doing business on my behalf. I have three houses and always get my money each month here in UK. I should perhaps COUNT MY BLESSINGS

I am sick to the stomach. but I am not surprised. Many ppl had a lot of such things happen to them coz hama dzedu dzechitema, when one person makes it in the family, the rest want to harvest from that one successful person instead of working for their own success. I have a relative who lived in my house for many yrs, paying no rent and no bills, hoping they would save money and have something for themselves. Instead of saving money from what they do for a living, they started to splash their own money with careless spending for over 10 yrs. Could not even buy a piece of land for themselves. When I noticed that the "help" was not helping them, I asked them to move out and they told me I was cruel and they went to blackmail me to the rest of the family members that I was cruel and heartless. But I was not moved. By the time I got them out, imba yanga yava kunge danga renguruve, run down and broken down and plumbing was running down the place...couldn't even fix a SINGLE things. In order to rehabilitate the place I spent thousands of dollars and incured emotional expenses from angry relatives. But I don't care anymore. I now know if someone does not work for something they do not treasure it. Iye zvino I focus on building my own life and I expect them to build their own life with the money THEY WORK FOR and not my money. Dzimwe hama dzine mweya wechihure usina basa nekukoshesa chakanaka.

Count them buddy. You are one in a dozen. Most ppl have gained nothing except bad blood.

Read my comments above. I also placed a relative and later removed them...

You are a lucky person, if all of us had relatives like you we would be ahead as a nation

In Zim you cant trust anyone these days.. Hunhu hwaMatbili hwatekeshera kuhama neshamwari muZimbabwe!!

zvingaitwe sei mweya wechimbavha wakatanga kubva kuvakuru vedu venyika. munhu wese ava nehuori muno munyika medu.

It is still tricky. Tendai gave his brother John the power of attorney - John then could enter into deals on behalf of Tendai, as his attorney. Chances are after the sale of the house John and wife got the change and squandered it - in which case Tendai still loses the house. Such stories are now common in Zim - a disgrace really.

Most likely John and wife were taking the rentals from that house and 'chewing' them. That was not enough - they went a step further and lost the house. A friend asked her bro to build her a house, at her expense of course. Pictures of house development were sent to her every time. She was shocked when she got back to Zim only to be told there was none, and the bro kicked her out of his house. Kushaya nyadzi kwatava nako kwakaoma. Mhuka dziri nani.

Ende zvivanhu izvozvo zvaunenge uchibatsira ndizvo ma big supporters of a corrupt regime. Any wonder Mugabe is still in power with relatives like this? All those in the diaspora should stop assisting Zanu-pf supporters - if they suffer enough they will know how to boot out Matibili. This is infuriating mhani. Nxaaaa!

$200 bail?system failure

Change yakauya ikadyiwa neMboko idzo dziri two

This is quite sad. I took my title deeds and live with them overseas to try and avoid any of this happening. When you give power of attorney, it should be for specific purposes and should have a timeline after which that ceases.
