TWO armed robbers from Harare were shot dead during a shoot-out with the police in Masvingo’s Central Business District.

In a statement yesterday, national police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the incident occurred on Saturday at about 3am.

She identified the two robbers as Golden Magwenju (24) and Joseph Makunaka (20).
The two robbers have been on the run for allegedly committing a series of armed robberies.

“Our officers had a shoot-out with two armed robbers linked to 11 counts of armed robberies committed around Harare and Bulawayo,” said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

She said the two men had been terrorising members of the public. Magwenju and Makunaka were serial criminals involved in a spate of armed robberies.

On 16 June, they allegedly robbed a priest and got away with three laptops, a Nokia X2 cellphone, cash amounting to $18 700. The case was reported at Mabelreign Police Station.

The following day, the pair allegedly teamed up with accomplices still at large and robbed a Harare man of his vehicle and an undisclosed amount of money. This was after they had disarmed security guards who were guarding the premises. “They robbed the security guards of their pepper spray and a stun gun and a bulletproof jacket,” she said.

Snr Assist Comm Charamba said on 19 June at about 8.30 pm, they allegedly broke into a house in Bowood, Mt Pleasant in Harare, armed with pistols.

“After breaking into the house, they attacked the complainants who were in the dining room and threatened them with pistols. They robbed them of $2 000, Samsung galaxy cellphones, Iphone 4s, Nokia C7, jewellery and $200 after which they demanded the complainant’s car keys and drove away,” she said.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba warned robbers, saying the long arm of the law would catch up with them.
“As police, we would like to warn all robbers that the long arm of the law would catch up with them,”  she said.
